This document serves as a supplement to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Faculty Standards of Competence and Performance to provide additional expectations appropriate to the department’s discipline. It serves to clarify how the collegiate standards can be applied and evaluated within the department.

Basic expectations for all faculty

All tracks and ranks

Teaching

Regularly appointed CARS faculty of all tracks and ranks are expected to do the following with regard to teaching:

  • Develop a coherent rotation of courses for the department in their area of specialization, including interdisciplinary topics as appropriate, and teach the courses assigned by the DEO, taking into consideration the faculty member’s preferences and the advice of the curriculum committee.
  • If it is necessary to miss a regularly scheduled class meeting, the instructor should notify the DEO and make alternative arrangements as far in advance as possible.
  • Review the performance of Teaching Assistants if they are assigned to their courses using recommended departmental and collegiate materials and forms.
  • Develop high-contact course structures, innovative teaching, and effective assessment and evaluation methods.

Service

Regularly appointed CARS faculty of all tracks and ranks are expected to do the following with regard to service:

  • Attend all faculty meetings. Faculty meeting times are held at least once monthly, are regularly occurring, and are scheduled prior to the beginning of the semester on a day that does not conflict with every faculty member’s schedule. Faculty members are expected to refrain from scheduling other meetings and/or events during this period.
  • Regularly attend department-sponsored events (e.g. colloquia, the Adler Awards Ceremony, etc.)

Tenure-track faculty expectations

These may include, but are not limited to DEO, DGS, DUS, Course Scheduling Committee, Undergraduate Studies Committee, Graduate Studies Committee, Events and Public Engagement Committee, Scholarship and Awards Committee, Jewish Studies Certificate Coordinator, Museum Studies Certificate Coordinator, Director of Outreach and Public Engagement; and, at the level of CLAS or the University, for example, GECC, GEPC, UEPCC, EC, FA, Faculty Senate. Teaching

  • All pre-tenure tenure-track faculty are expected to participate actively in graduate student mentorship through graduate seminars, as well as membership on graduate student committees and/or as a primary advisor. Research

  • Pre-tenure tenure-track faculty are expected to make progress toward the collegiate and departmental requirements for tenure, eventually leading to outcomes such as articles published in a peer-reviewed journal, chapters in a peer-reviewed edited volume, or a monograph. Chapter drafts, digital projects, creative works, field work reports, and curatorial activity, whether or not peer-reviewed, may also count towards this requirement with appropriate documentation of effort and impact. Co-authored papers for which the faculty member is a major contributor may also count towards this requirement with appropriate documentation of effort and impact.

Service

  • The department will seek to protect pre-tenure tenure-track faculty from multiple service assignments to the extent that this is possible while still providing a strong record of service for the tenure review.
