This document serves as a supplement to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Faculty Standards of Competence and Performance to provide additional expectations appropriate to the department’s discipline. It serves to clarify how the collegiate standards can be applied and evaluated within the department.
Department values statement
Faculty in the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability, according to their track and rank, are expected to advance knowledge through sustained scholarly contributions, guide undergraduate and graduate students in their academic and professional development, provide hands-on training in field and laboratory settings, teach with rigor and creativity in the classroom, and contribute through service to the school, university, and broader profession. Across these areas, we promote a culture of continual growth, encouraging faculty at every stage to refine and expand their expertise. Our collective aim is to elevate the quality and reach of our work, strengthen the school’s reputation and visibility, and support our students in achieving their long-term goals.
Tenure-track faculty expectations
All tenure-track ranks
Teaching
- Engage in teaching that aligns with the needs of the department.
- Recruit and mentor postdoctoral scholars when circumstances allow.
- Perform some combination of the following each year: advise graduate students and serve as committee members for other students in the school.
Research
- Research-active faculty are expected to maintain productivity averaging 1-2 peer-reviewed publications per year, or an equivalent mix of articles, book chapters (in the production of a (co)authored book or edited volume), and proceedings of high impact conferences per year. Assistant professors should demonstrate progress toward this level by the tenure review.
- Reputable journals are defined by rigorous peer review, transparent editorial policies, strong editorial boards, reputable indexing, and a record of publishing credible research.
- Research contributions should advance knowledge, demonstrate rigor and innovation, and be communicated transparently.
- Publication rates will vary across disciplines, and such variation is considered in reviews.
- External funding is essential to sustaining research and supporting trainees. Research-active faculty without current funding are expected to submit regular proposals (typically at least 1 per year for associate and full professors).
- In cases where funding opportunities are limited, evidence of strong proposal reviews rather than funded proposals may also be considered.
- Evidence of student support from external sources should include some combination of providing research assistantships or providing funding for research activities for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars (e.g., travel to research sites, analytical costs, travel to conferences).
- Each faculty member should on average present their work at one or more national or international conferences per year.
Service
- Attend committee meetings, school faculty meetings, and talks in the school seminar series during the fall and spring semesters and respond promptly to requests from the DEO or committee chairs.

Service
- Serve on one to two school committee per year or equivalent administrative activities determined in consultation with the DEO.
- Serve on average on at least one college or university committee per year. Institutional service may also occur in the form of public interactions and outreach, including but not limited to being a scientific commentator (TV, radio, video) and giving public lectures/seminars.
