The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is a research- and teaching-oriented unit made up of multidisciplinary faculty who work in the arts, humanities, and social sciences specializing in language, literary and cultural studies, creative writing, linguistics, and Spanish for the professions. Through innovative teaching in a variety of modalities, we cultivate learning that builds critical and creative thinking skills, opportunities to develop language abilities, and awareness of contemporary and historical issues to prepare students to be multilingual global citizens. We strive to generate and disseminate knowledge and understanding about Hispanic and Lusophone languages, literatures, and cultures within the framework of an engaged liberal arts education aimed at a lifetime of learning and fostering greater understanding between peoples.
