Beginning fall 2025, CLAS Undergraduate Programs will enforce an October 1 deadline for departments to propose curricular or structural changes that require approval from the College or its committees, the Office of the Provost, and/or the Iowa Board of Regents. Changes proposed prior to and on October 1 will be considered for a start date of the following fiscal or academic year, and changes proposed after October 1 will be considered for the year after. That is:

  • A proposed change submitted to CLAS UP in September 2025 could go into effect in fall 2026 (assuming it is approved)
  • A proposed change submitted to CLAS UP in November 2025 could go into effect in fall 2027 (assuming it is approved)

Enforcing a standard cutoff date will align CLAS UP’s curricular processes with the General Catalog cycle. It will also ensure that for each curricular project, there is sufficient time for obtaining approvals; making all necessary changes to catalog text, degree audits, plans of study, websites, and other materials; and communicating changes to students, faculty, staff, and campus partners.

CLAS UP is in the process of developing an intake form requesting basic information about proposed curricular and structural changes, and it is the submission date of this form that will determine the timing of the proposed change. The form will be located on the Curriculum page of the CLAS Resource website, along with information about the deadline and which types of changes need to follow this process. Finally, CLAS UP is also developing a proposal template for changes that need to be approved by the Undergraduate Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee (UEPCC), which will be located on the same site.

We will send another announcement when the new form and template are ready for use. Please contact Liz Lundberg (elizabeth-lundberg@uiowa.edu) with any questions.
