The University of Iowa’s Pat Folsom Excellence in Academic Advising Award was created to recognize the support that primary role Academic Advisors provide to students on our campus.  

The award is named in honor of Pat Folsom, who spent 30 years in academic advising at the University of Iowa.  When Pat retired in 2012 from her position as Assistant Provost and Director of the Academic Advising Center, she was a well-respected leader at the University of Iowa and in the advising profession. During her tenure at Iowa, Pat was a fierce advocate for student success, as well as for the role that advisors play in the student experience. Extensively involved in NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising, Pat laid the foundation for what academic advising has become on our campus and globally. The lasting impact of Pat’s work remains evident at the University of Iowa and in the global advising community. 

Please fill out the nomination form (Qualtrics), to nominate a deserving primary role Academic Advisor on the University of Iowa campus. All nominations are due by May 9, 2025. Nominees will be notified and asked to submit brief supplemental materials to complete the nomination process by June 2, 2025. Award recipients will be recognized in September 2025.

Excellent Academic Advisors:  

• Facilitate Student Success through critical academic guidance for undergraduates    
• Demonstrate a passion to work with students while maintaining a professional and helpful attitude    
• Contribute to a spirit of collaboration with colleagues and departments across campus to improve supports for the students we serve  
• Display a commitment to professional development, as well as a willingness to try new approaches            

Two primary role Academic Advisors (one in service 1-5 years/one in service 5+ years) will be selected for a monetary award and will be recognized at the annual Advising at Iowa Fall Kickoff event in September 2025.
