This document serves as a supplement to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Faculty Standards of Competence and Performance to provide additional expectations appropriate to the department’s discipline. It serves to clarify how the collegiate standards can be applied and evaluated within the department.
Department values statement
The mission of the Department of Computer Science is to be an exemplar of the field of computing, through its pursuit of computing research, education, and practice to the highest standard of excellence. More specifically, we endeavor:
- to advance the state-of-the-art in computer science, promote and engage in interdisciplinary research, and address broader societal issues at the intersection of computing and everyday life;
- to provide outstanding undergraduate and graduate computing education that prepares students technically, scientifically, and ethically for lifelong success and personal fulfillment in our modern society;
- to serve the college, the university, the people of Iowa, the nation, and the world with our collective expertise; and
- to advance our goals while maintaining the highest standards of collegiality and professionalism.
Basic expectations for all faculty
All tracks and ranks
Computer science is a rapidly changing discipline; all faculty members are expected to dedicate time and effort to maintaining currency in the discipline as well as within their selected specialization(s) throughout their careers.
Teaching
- Undertake regular review of all course content and associated materials to reflect our rapidly changing discipline while maintaining high academic standards.
- Engage in systematic efforts to improve teaching skills and keep pace with evolving pedagogy, either through self directed activities or in collaboration with the Center for Teaching, the Office of Teaching and Learning, or other similar Collegiate and University wide units.
- Provide teaching assistants and other teaching support staff assigned to your course with clear guidance and reasonable expectations.
- Be available to students in your courses by holding regularly scheduled office hours and responding to all reasonable course-related requests in a timely fashion.
Service
- Engage with departmental initiatives, such as goal setting, policy discussions, faculty hiring, curriculum revisions, student recruiting, and efforts to improve the student experience.
- Respond promptly to questions or requests from department staff and leadership.
- Fulfill any assigned departmental service tasks promptly and professionally.
Tenure-track faculty expectations
All tenure-track ranks
Teaching
- Engage with graduate education by building research collaborations with graduate students while actively participating in the Department’s annual graduate student reviews and serving on PhD qualifying exam committees when assigned.
Research
- Maintain an active program of research within one’s chosen area(s) of specialization, including regular publication of research results in refereed journals and conferences, while including graduate and/or undergraduate research students as appropriate.
- Regularly apply for peer-reviewed federal grant funding (e.g., NSF, NIH, etc.), including as PI or Co-PI.
Service
- Engage in faculty governance by staying informed and participating in faculty elections.
- Develop a portfolio of professional service activities: examples may include, for example, program committee memberships for well-regarded conferences, reviewing for high-impact journals, or reviewing proposals for federal granting agencies such as the NSF, NIH, or other similar agencies.
Assistant professor
No additional unique expectations beyond the basic expectations for all faculty and those for all tenure-track faculty ranks.
Associate professor
In addition to expectations for assistant professors:
Teaching
- Organize and lead, possibly in collaboration with other faculty, informal seminars or reading/research groups where graduate and advanced undergraduate students can explore advanced topics in sub-areas of our discipline.
- Actively mentor undergraduate students within and outside the classroom, through service as a faculty advisor, honors advisor, or research mentor.
- Actively mentor graduate students at all stages in the PhD pipeline. This includes helping a student develop a coherent research program along with the requisite writing and presentation skills, collaborating on research and publication of results, and ensuring they successfully complete their degree in a timely fashion.
- Actively mentor faculty at lower rank as they seek to improve their own teaching skills, including active participation in the department’s teaching evaluation activities.
- Provide teaching assistants and other teaching support staff assigned to your course with an opportunity to develop and improve their own teaching skills via active mentorship and participation in course management.
Research
- Actively mentor young faculty as they develop their own research programs, including by discussing research directions and ideas, reading and critiquing draft articles and grant proposals, and participating in joint proposals where appropriate.
- Apply for grant funding to support departmental and collegiate initiatives, such as training grants, equipment grants, or instructional grants when appropriate opportunities are presented.
- Engage, where appropriate, with industrial partners to promote the department and the discipline, including, for example, through joint projects or by fostering student internship opportunities.
Service
- Serve, when appointed, on faculty review or other departmental committees, discharging these obligations promptly and in good faith.
- Actively promote the interests of the department, its faculty, and its students within the broader computing community, including through graduate student and faculty recruiting efforts.
- Develop a culture of service by actively seeking opportunities to serve on collegiate or university committees
Full professor
In addition to expectations for assistant and associate professors:
Teaching
- Embrace opportunities to expand one’s teaching portfolio to meet departmental needs and priorities.
- Maintain the highest possible level of teaching quality and effectiveness across all course offerings.
- Participate or take a leadership role in curricular or accreditation efforts as directed by the department.
Research
- Maintain a high-impact research program by all appropriate measures, such as professional awards, publications in top venues, citation indexes, federal grant support, industry funding, graduate student placement, and so on.
- Actively promote departmental research efforts, including, where appropriate, by engaging in large, multiinvestigator and/or multi-disciplinary research projects with support from federal and/or industry sources
Service
- Continue to engage in high-impact service at all levels (profession, department, college, university, community), including pursuing and accepting leadership opportunities where appropriate.
Instructional-track faculty expectations
Assistant professor of instruction/practice
No additional unique expectations beyond the basic expectations for all faculty (all tracks and ranks).
Associate professor of instruction/practice
In addition to expectations for assistant professor of instruction/practice:
Teaching
- Actively mentor undergraduate students within and outside the classroom, through service as a faculty advisor, honors advisor, or research mentor.
- Actively mentor faculty at lower rank as they seek to improve their own teaching skills, including active participation in the Department’s teaching evaluation activities.
- Provide teaching assistants and other teaching support staff assigned to your course with an opportunity to develop and improve their own teaching skills via active mentorship and participation in course management.
Service
