Tenure-track faculty expectations

All tenure-track ranks

Research

  • The department does not stipulate a particular rate of publication or set of journals, but a rule of thumb is that each research-active faculty member will produce on average at least 1 publication in a reputable, peer-reviewed philosophy journal per year, where the faculty member is the sole or first author, or a main contributor to the article.
  • The department recognizes that there are other equally valuable forms of research productivity in addition to peer-reviewed journal publications. These include substantial progress on a book project, securing an external research grant, or a chapter in an anthology published by a high-quality publisher.
  • A reputable philosophy journal is characterized by a commitment to rigorous peer review and a history of publishing credible research. A philosophy journal is understood broadly to include generalist and specialist journals in philosophy, interdisciplinary journals where philosophy is one of the disciplines, and high-profile journals in the humanities and sciences that regularly publish philosophical work.
  • The department recognizes a variety of markers of increased reputation, including invitations to give talks at other institutions and at conferences, serving on the editorial board of a reputable journal or publisher, editing special issues for reputable journals, prestigious awards, fellowships, and endowed positions. These are a sign of the visibility of a scholar’s research and contribute to the visibility and reputation of the department.
