This document serves as a supplement to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Faculty Standards of Competence and Performance to provide additional expectations appropriate to the department's discipline. It serves to clarify how the collegiate standards can be applied and evaluated within the department.
Department values statement
Faculty in the School of Art, Art History, and Design (SAAHD) are cutting edge practitioners and historians specializing in a broad range of artistic media, and the mentorship and training of undergraduate and graduate students. We offer impactful and relevant teaching, and provide active and dedicated service to the department, college, university, and profession. In every aspect of our work, SAAHD encourages and rewards efforts on the part of faculty at all levels to develop their expertise and enhance the breadth of their research. Our shared purpose is to raise the profile of the school and help our students reach new levels of achievement.
Basic expectations for all faculty
All tracks and ranks
Teaching
- The school upholds the CLAS policies for graduate and undergraduate education, including:
- Creating and maintaining a welcoming classroom environment.
- Attending all sessions of courses taught in the appropriate modality unless other arrangements are made in conversation with the DEO, ADEO, or Department Administrator.
- The school emphasizes Chapter 15.4 of the University of Iowa Professional Ethics and Academic Policy:
- The faculty member has obligations that derive from common membership in the community of academics. The faculty member respects and defends the free inquiry of others and avoids interference with their work. The faculty member refrains from personal vilification; threatening, intimidating, or abusive language; or conduct that creates a hostile work environment. The faculty member acknowledges contributions of others to the faculty member's work. When asked to evaluate the professional performance of another, the faculty member strives to be objective. In the exchange of criticisms and ideas, the faculty member shows due respect for the rights of others to express differing opinions. However, vigorous debate and criticism are not to be viewed as a lack of respect.
- Faculty are expected to uphold the same level of conduct described in the above paragraph with the staff of the school.
- Faculty are expected to exhibit and maintain competence in their fields sufficient to offer ample graduate and undergraduate level instruction in the courses assigned to them.
Service
- Faculty are expected to attend faculty meetings for their entire duration, participate in a respectful and professional manner, maintain standards of confidentiality, and work to build a positive and productive faculty community. When a faculty member is unable to attend a meeting, notification is required to the DEO or department administrator. Faculty are also expected to participate in school-wide lectures and faculty development series, to contribute to departmental team building efforts, and to contribute diligently toward the betterment of the School.
- Failure to adhere to the items listed above will be noted in yearly performance evaluations and reviewed with the associate dean for further remedy as needed.
Tenure-track faculty expectations
All tenure-track ranks
Teaching
- The standard teaching load of tenure-track and tenured faculty in SAAHD is two courses per semester. Tenured faculty members must teach undergraduate and graduate students on a regular basis, and in Studio, serve as faculty advisors to assigned undergraduate students and advisees, and mentor graduate students (including chairing or serving on thesis committees), and serving on exam committees in Art History. All faculty consistently revise course materials to reflect current trends in their respective disciplines and periodically create new courses as appropriate. Teaching is typically assessed through quantitative and narrative responses on student SPOT evaluations for every course taught each semester. Responses are expected to range between 4.0 and 6.0 in most categories. Teaching is also evaluated by faculty peer-review committees, and classroom observations in the probationary review and post-tenure review process.
Research
- Studio and Art History faculty are expected to maintain a sustained record of scholarly and creative achievement, as well as demonstrate progress through tangible materials appropriate to the discipline.
- The school does not stipulate a particular rate of exhibitions, publications, or other scholarly products, but the expectation is that each faculty member will have scholarly products in process or occurring each year.
- The school acknowledges that its areas and disciplines differ widely with regard to the effort and process required to produce a significant work. Accordingly, it is anticipated that even the most accomplished faculty members may have very different rates of productivity.
