Is there a burning topic in your discipline or a topic that cuts across disciplines that we should bring to campus? Is there a format for the conversation that can energize an intellectual community around that topic? That might be the perfect topic for an Obermann Symposium!

The Obermann Symposium is an opportunity for UI scholars to explore an important topic using an interdisciplinary lens. Co-directors invite national and international speakers who provide an interdisciplinary response to the theme, and also highlight the work of UI and local experts. The 1–2 day symposium often includes an arts component, as well as opportunities to share pedagogical approaches..

The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies currently invites proposals from UI faculty for the 2027–28 Symposium. In addition to the financial award of up to $15,000 to cover expenses such as traveling and honoraria, director(s) will also receive significant staff support.

Applications are due Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026. For eligibility information and to apply, visit https://obermann.uiowa.edu/symposium-directorship-application-information.
