As CLAS's Academic Assessment Coordinator, Matthew (Matt) Shadle is responsible for facilitating the assessment of student learning in CLAS's many undergraduate academic programs and helps oversee the CLAS Core general education curriculum. He works with the Directors of Undergraduate Studies and other faculty members to develop strategies for promoting and assessing student learning, student interest and engagement, and career readiness in each of CLAS's majors. He also guides faculty members through the process of designing and proposing new general education courses and works with the faculty chair of the General Education Curriculum Committee to lead the process for approving new general education courses. He also coordinates the periodic assessment of the different areas of the CLAS Core curriculum. He fulfills other assessment-related functions for CLAS as needed, and serves as a liaison to other university offices and groups like the Office of Assessment, the Center for Teaching, and the Institutional Data Users Group.

Matt joined the CLAS UP team in 2023. He previously served as a professor of religious studies and theology at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa (2006-2014) and Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia (2014-2022). In 2019, he received Marymount's School of Design, Arts, and Humanities Scholarship Award in recognition for his scholarly research and publications. At both institutions, he was involved in the assessment of the undergraduate curriculum, and at Marymount he also served as the Faculty Coordinator of Service Learning. He received his MA and PhD in Theology at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, and his BA in Religion at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.

As the Academic Assessment Coordinator, Matt especially enjoys working with faculty members to find creative ways to improve the student learning experience. He also appreciates how his work helps faculty better see the "big picture" of how their individual courses fit together into a coherent whole for students. As a lifelong learner with a great deal of curiosity, he also enjoys learning about all the fascinating courses offered by the university's faculty.
