Diane has been a dedicated member of the University of Iowa community for nearly 30 years, including more than 18 years in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her connection to the university began as a student in CLAS, where she earned a BA in Social Work and a minor in Sociology. She later completed an MA in Education at Towson State University and pursued graduate coursework in Higher Education, Policy, Planning, and Leadership at Iowa.
Diane joined the Academic Advising Center in the mid-1990s and moved to the CLAS Dean’s Office in 2008, where she served for almost two decades as an Associate Director, Senior Associate Director, and Director. Her leadership contributed to numerous student success initiatives, including participating in the founding of the campus-wide Early Intervention Team, UI Advise, the UI Advising Council and the development of our current advising program, standards, and assessment practices.
In 2014, Diane began building the CLAS Advising Network, which now includes more than 30 professional advisors and a robust training and leadership structure. Diane’s efforts have had a lasting impact on student support in CLAS. She played a key role in creating a comprehensive advising system that ensures a smooth transition from first year advising to departmental advising. Her work helped establish required advising for all CLAS sophomores, contributing to improved retention and graduation rates. Today, every academic program in CLAS benefits from dedicated professional advisors, a milestone achieved through Diane’s vision and leadership.
Beyond CLAS, Diane has been an active contributor to the advising community across campus and within the Big Ten Academic Alliance. Her collaborative spirit and thoughtful guidance have supported countless students, faculty, and staff. In recognition of her advocacy, Diane received the Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy in 2018, one of the University’s highest honors for student support.
We will miss Diane’s insight, dedication, and collegiality. We wish her all the best in retirement, with more time to enjoy family, including her grandson, and friends.
If you are not able to attend the celebration, please feel free to email Diane with a congratulations message or drop off a card for her at the 120 SH or UCC 1112 front desks – we will make sure she gets these greetings!
All the best, and congrats again to Diane!
