Have you ever had a transformative moment teaching a general education course?

Did your teaching experience lead you to update your approach to teaching, give you new insights into your discipline, or cause you to notice some positive change among your students?

As part of the second annual CLAS Teaching Excellence Showcase, the college plans to bring together faculty to share their transformative experiences teaching general education courses and to demonstrate the importance of the general education curriculum. The CLAS Teaching Excellence Showcase will be held on Friday, Nov. 7, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. More information on the event (including our keynote speaker) to follow soon!

CLAS is therefore seeking proposals for “flash presentations” (3-5 minutes) around the theme of “Stories of Success and Transformation in Teaching GE Courses.”

  • The proposal should be 200 words or less and should be submitted to clas-curriculum@uiowa.edu by Friday, Oct. 3.
  • Your proposal should introduce the transformative moment teaching general education you hope to share at the CLAS Teaching Excellence Showcase.
  • Your proposal should explain what other instructors might learn from your experience.

Stories can range in tone from purely informative to fun and entertaining. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to share your experience and highlight your teaching.

We are looking forward to hearing from you! If you have questions, please reach out to clas-curriculum@uiowa.edu.

Note: this memo was also published on Sept. 10 and 24, 2025.
