Hubbard-Walder Award for Excellence in Teaching nominations due Feb. 4

The University of Iowa Council on Teaching is now accepting nominations for the Hubbard-Walder Award for Excellence in Teaching.

This award recognizes up to five outstanding faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in a rich variety of university teaching (e.g., undergraduate, graduate or professional, classroom, one-on-one) and contributed to curriculum and/or program development. Each award includes a $1,000 honorarium. 

Nomination Process

Each Departmental Executive Officer (DEO) is eligible to nominate one faculty member from their department. Each nomination must include: 

• A completed Hubbard-Walder Award cover sheet.
• A letter of nomination and support from the nominee’s DEO (not to exceed two pages).
• A statement on teaching from the nominee (not to exceed one page).
• An abbreviated CV (not to exceed five pages) for the nominee that includes:
  • Brief professional history.
  • List of courses taught for the past five years.
  • List of contributions to curriculum and/or program development within the past ten years.
  • List of teaching awards while at the University of Iowa.
• One letter of support from an internal or external faculty member other than the DEO (not to exceed two pages).
• Two letters of support from current or former University of Iowa students (not to exceed two pages per letter). 

Complete guidelines for how to nominate are available online. All documents should be combined into a single, bookmarked PDF file and submitted electronically to council-on-teaching@uiowa.edu.

Eligibility and Deadlines

The nominee must have a minimum of six years of teaching experience at the University of Iowa and must hold the rank of associate professor, professor, clinical associate professor, clinical professor, associate professor of instruction/practice, or professor of instruction/practice. We encourage nominators to engage with students, faculty, and administrators to identify outstanding faculty to nominate for the award. The Hubbard-Walder Award for Excellence in Teaching can only be received once. 

Nominations are due on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
