All criteria must be met for a successful promotion review. Some criteria have been established at the time of hire (such as terminal degree) and must still be acknowledged in the promotion review reports.
Promotion criteria
Tenure-track criteria
Associate professor
Faculty members are expected to have served at the rank of assistant professor for a period of time sufficient to have established a record in the areas of teaching, of research, scholarship, or creative work, and of service that meets the criteria below and shows unmistakable promise of promotion to full professor. Most faculty members in the College serve a probationary period of six years.
Faculty promoted or appointed to the rank of associate professor are ordinarily expected
- to hold the doctorate or other terminal degree of the discipline or to have equivalent training and experience as appropriate to the particular appointment;
- to have an acknowledged record of success in undergraduate and graduate teaching, including successful direction of doctoral and/or master's candidates, as applicable;
- to have national recognition for a productive program of research, scholarship, or creative work, supported by substantial, significant publication (or the equivalent) of high quality;
- to have participated in the professional activities of the discipline, in ways other than teaching and research; and
to have established an appropriate record of departmental service
Professor
Candidates for promotion to full professor are expected to have established a record since promotion to associate professor that demonstrates a pattern of sustained development and substantial growth in achievement and productivity in the areas of teaching; of research, scholarship, and creative work; and of service.
Faculty promoted or appointed to the rank of professor are ordinarily expected
- to hold the doctorate or other terminal degree of the discipline or to have equivalent training and experience appropriate to the particular appointment;
- to have an acknowledged record of continued success in undergraduate and graduate teaching, including continued successful direction of doctoral candidates to the completion of their degree programs, as applicable;
- to have sustained unmistakable national recognition and, where applicable, to have achieved international recognition for a productive program of research, scholarship, or creative work of high quality; and
- to have a substantial and sustained record of effective service to the department, the institution, and the profession
Department-specific criteria
Several departments have departmental criteria for tenure-track rank approved by the college as consistent with the university and collegiate criteria:
Instructional-track criteria
Associate professor of instruction
- Terminal degree or other educational qualifications appropriate to the position
- Over a typical span of five years at the college’s rank of assistant professor of instruction, an established record of:
a) effectiveness in teaching; and
b) effectiveness in service to the department
Professor of instruction
- Terminal degree or other educational qualifications appropriate to the position
- Over a typical span of five years at the college’s rank of associate professor of instruction, a sustained record of:
a) effectiveness in teaching;
b) contributions to the teaching mission such as curriculum redesign or development, mentorship of other faculty, or other leadership; and
c) effectiveness in service to the department as well as the college, institution, profession, or community
Associate professor of practice
- Terminal degree or other educational or professional qualifications appropriate to the position
- Over a typical span of five years at the college’s rank of assistant professor of practice, an established record of:
a) effectiveness in teaching; and
b) effectiveness in service to the department - Evidence of professional activity in the field of practice
Professor of practice
- Terminal degree or other educational qualifications or professional qualifications appropriate to the position
- Over a typical span of five years at the college’s rank of associate professor of practice, a sustained record of:
a) effectiveness in teaching;
b) contributions to the teaching mission such as curriculum redesign or development, mentorship of other faculty, or other leadership; and
c) effectiveness in service to the department as well as the college, institution, profession, or community. - Evidence of professional activity in the field of practice
Clinical-track criteria
Clinical associate professor
Faculty promoted, appointed, or reappointed to the rank of clinical associate professor are ordinarily expected:
- to hold the doctorate or terminal master's degree in the discipline;
- to have current certification and/or licensure as specified by the department of appointment;
- to have an established record of sustained success in clinical or other professional practice;
- to have an established record of sustained success in teaching and/or in clinical supervision at the undergraduate and/or the graduate levels and/or in clinic direction (as appropriate to the position description);
- to have an established record of success in professional productivity (see Evidence of Professional Productivity and Service) and (where appropriate to the position description) direction of clinical activities in ways that contribute to and sustain departmental research programs; and
- to have an established record of effective participation in departmental service (including, but not limited to, clinical service) and in service to state, regional, and/or national professional organizations and, where specified by the department, in professional service in the community
Clinical professors
Faculty promoted, appointed, or reappointed to the rank of clinical professor are ordinarily expected:
- to hold the doctorate or terminal master's degree of the discipline;
- to have current certification and/or licensure as specified by the department of appointment;
- to have an established record of sustained success and excellence in clinical or other professional practice;
- to have an established record of sustained success and excellence in teaching and/or in clinical supervision at the undergraduate and/or the graduate levels and/or in clinic direction (as appropriate to the position description);
- to have achieved unmistakable recognition for professional contributions (see Evidence of Professional Productivity and Service) and (where appropriate to the position description) direction of clinical activities in ways that contribute to and sustain departmental research programs; and
- to have a substantial and sustained record of effective participation in service (including, but not limited to, clinical service) to the department, to the institution, and to the profession at the regional and/or national level, and, where specified by the department, a sustained record of effective professional service in the community
